Modus, formerly Medusa D8: from delta-8 vapes to 7-OH tablets, and the pack in the Ole Miss case

Who they say they are, and what the record says

Modus is a hemp and kratom brand that began as Medusa D8. On New Year's Day 2023 a buyer on r/delta8 headed a post “HOT TAKE: Medusa (New Name: Modus)”, and argued that the brand could be a leading one if it tested for more than strength.[1] The company had announced the change itself a few weeks earlier. Its home page of December 2022 carried a “name change announcement” from “california diamond distribution dba modus”, the website “formally medusad8 com”.[2] One company, two names, and the record that joins them.

The two websites were registered thirteen days apart through the same registrar: medusad8.com on 2021-02-11 and modusbrand.com on 2021-02-24.[3][4] The first readable copy of the Medusa site is from January 2022. It gave a telephone number with a 510 area code, the East Bay of San Francisco, and an email address at medusamj.com: “wholesale inquires sales medusamj com call us directly 510 255 0180”.[5] By November 2022 the site carried a banner that may explain the rename: “we are not affiliated with new jersey based medusa distribution llc”.[6] The same banner was still on the first Modus home page a month later.[2]

The brand has moved east since. Its footer in July 2026 gave “winter park fl 32792”, a city outside Orlando, with no street.[7] The kratom store, Modus Life, said in 2024 that its products were “made in california”.[8] Fox News reported in October 2026 that the company “has offices in florida and california”.[9] The domain records withhold the owners' names.

The company runs more than one storefront. modusbrand.com sells the hemp products. moduslife.com, which the brand calls a sister site, sold kratom, amanita mushroom gummies and, from 2024, 7-OH and pseudoindoxyl. A third address, buymodus.com, is printed on the back of its tablet packs (see Regulatory and legal).

What they sell

Hemp blends, 2021 to now. Medusa D8 sold vape devices and cartridges by blend. The January 2022 menu read “disposables hxc knock out thc o thc p delta x delta 8”, and the newest arrival was an “hxc 2 gram disposable”.[5] Most of those names are delta-8 THC mixed with something stronger or newer. A Knockout box photographed in February 2023 reads THC-O plus delta-8 live resin plus THC-P, two grams in one device.[10] THC-O is a semi-synthetic acetate; THC-P is a trace cannabinoid that hemp sellers make in bulk. The Tap Out box from the same year names four: delta-11, THC-X, delta-8 liquid diamonds and THC-B.[11] THC-X and THC-B have no agreed chemical identity. A reader of the New Year's post objected on those grounds, writing that the brand sold THC-JD, “they sell thc jd which has never been proven to be an actual cannabinoid”.[1]

The 2022 Modus footer described the range as “premium delta 8 products made in california”.[2] The site says that “orders will not be shipped until age is verified to be over 21 for all thc products”.[7] The snake stayed when the name went. A buyer who found a tiny snake drawn on a disposable was told by another that “every medusa item i've had has had the snake face”.[12] Later lines added THCA. A buyer in July 2024 held up “the thca presidential blend by modus”, a 3-gram device, and the replies were not kind: “harshest shit i've ever smoked”.[13] Gas stations carried the gummies too. In March 2023 a buyer “saw them at my gas station says 10 mg of d9 10 of cbd”, that is, delta-9 THC and CBD.[14]

Mushrooms and kratom, from 2023. Modus Life was online by November 2023 with three kratom products and Voodoo Mushroom Gummies, sold as “a legal alternative to psilocybin” and “made with a blend of muscimol muscarine and ibotenic acid that are extracted from amanita muscaria mushrooms”.[15] Those are the active compounds of the fly agaric, Amanita muscaria: muscimol and ibotenic acid. The kratom was a Gold Series of extract gummies, shots and capsules. A sponsored article the brand placed with the cannabis site Herb, which says at the top that “this article contains sponsored content”, gives the dose of a gummy: “each gummy contains a generous serving of 100mg mitragyna speciosa and 70mg of mitragynine”.[16] The first Reddit post about a Modus kratom product, in December 2023, read the same number off the pack: “supposed to be 70mg malay mit gummy”.[17] Mitragynine is the main alkaloid of the leaf.

7-OH, July 2024. The first concentrated product was a capsule. Modus Life's listing in July 2024 read “7 hydroxymitragynine capsules fast acting nano formula high potency kratom size 10mg per capsule 6 capsules per blister”.[8] 7-OH is a minor alkaloid of the leaf that is made in quantity from mitragynine. The capsules reached shops at once; a buyer that month reported “6 capsules 10mg each” at a vape shop.[18] The card on the blister calls its contents “Advanced Kratom Alkaloids” and, under the name 7-Hydroxymitragynine, “Mitragyna speciosa (kratom) leaf extract”.[19] The website described the contents differently. Of the later tablets it said “these tablets contain the isolated 7 oh extract”.[20] A 30 mg shot followed in August, “size 30mg per shot”,[21] and 20 mg chewable tablets in four flavours by December: “concentration 20mg per tablet quantity 4 tablets per pack”.[20] By 2025 single tablets were sold in foil pouches at shop counters.[22]

Pseudoindoxyl, December 2024. Next came tablets of mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, listed with “ingredients pseudoindoxyl extract microcrystalline cellulose” at 20 mg a tablet. The listing explained the compound correctly in its first half, “pseudoindoxyl is a rare derivative of the primary active compound in kratom called 7 hydroxymitragynine”, and then sold it as the milder choice, a way to enjoy kratom “without the intense peaks or rapid tolerance build up often seen with traditional kratom”.[23] Pseudoindoxyl is a rearrangement product of 7-OH, and our page on it covers what is known of its potency.

Smax, July 2025. The line that became the brand's best known in shops was Smax. Modus Life listed two Smax tablets in July 2025, at 60 mg each. One was 7-OH, “each 60mg tablet is crafted with premium 7 hydroxymitragynine”, sold as four to a card, “total per blister 240mg”.[24] The other was pseudoindoxyl, under the line “unlock a next generation kratom experience with smax pseudoindoxyl tablets”, which explained that “pseudoindoxyl is a specialized derivative of 7 hydroxymitragynine”, at “concentration 60mg per tablet quantity 4 tablets per blister total per pack 240mg”.[25] A buyer that month “picked up these modus smax tabs 60mg per tab” at a gas station.[26] Another, who wanted 7-OH and grabbed the wrong card, found that “they were just plain pseudo 60mg tabs modus brand”.[27]

By October 2025 shops had Smax at 100 mg a tablet. One buyer noticed that “i bought a 400 mg pack of smax today and they were the exact same price as the 240 mg”.[29] A card from June 2026 reads Smax 7 Hydroxy Tablets, 100 mg tabs, 400 mg pack.[30] When Georgia's shops cleared 7-OH from their shelves in late 2025, the replacements on one gas station's wall included two rows of Smax.[31]

The store changed in the summer of 2025. On 2025-08-13 the Modus Life home page showed leaf kratom and the Gold Series, under the heading “full spectrum full experience”, and no 7-OH or pseudoindoxyl, while the page's title still read “modus life premium kratom pseudo 7 hydroxy natural wellness”.[32] The tablets stayed in shops for more than a year after that (see What buyers report).

What buyers report

We searched the local Arctic Shift archive of the 7-OH, kratom, cannabis and vaping subreddits for Modus on 2026-10-11. 124 posts name it between 2023-01-01 and 2026-10-04: 62 in r/7_hydroxymitragynine, 11 in r/7oh, 9 in r/altcannabinoids, 7 each in r/cleancarts and r/Vaping, 6 in r/delta8 and the rest in eight smaller subreddits. 80 are about the kratom-alkaloid products. A search for Medusa found 9 posts about the brand, 8 of them in r/delta8 between January and April 2023. We read about 85 threads with their comments.[33]

Keyword counts over the titles and texts of the 124 posts, which say what buyers talk about rather than how often anything happened: 27 posts use a word such as weak, under-dosed, bunk, garbage or trash; 58 use a word of praise; 21 mention withdrawal, quitting or tapering; 17 mention pseudo; 17 mention Smax; 15 mention a lab, a certificate or TestMyKratom; 4 mention a fake.

The hemp. The hemp buyers' complaint is testing, not strength. The New Year's poster defined a word this site's owner later used for the brand. He wrote that he was not recommending anyone smoke boof, which he glossed as “anything without full panel labs”, and added that “medusa does have labs but they only test for potency”.[1] On r/cleancarts one reply was blunter: “this brand of hemp doesnt have sufficient testing to know if its clean”,[34] and of the certificates a buyer posted, “no reason to think the labs are real”.[35]

The owner's own account. This site's owner posted about Modus capsules on r/7_hydroxymitragynine in July 2024, as a buyer. He described Modus as a brand “who i only know as a super boof and shitty disposable noid vape brand”, and wrote: “i bought stuff from them variously over the years even under their previous company name and they are synonymous with boof”. His first capsules worked better than he expected. In later comments he reported that “on further use their caps do not seem reliably dosed”, and that “they will have wild variance even in the same package from capsule to capsule”.[36] That is one buyer's report and an opinion, given here as his and dated.

The 7-OH products. Reports on the capsules split. One buyer in August 2024: “modus caps are fire”, and “they are also some of the most consistently dosed servings around”.[37] Another, the same month: “modus 10 mg capsules 0 10 nasty looking capsules filled with white powder”.[38] A third settled on “not worth the price but not completely junk”.[39] Once a laboratory result was posted, buyers cited it: “glad someone could quote actual labs which confirm my lack luster experience”.[19]

The tablets drew the same split. A buyer in September 2025 wrote that “the modus are 20mg but a 1 4th of one hit me like the first time”.[22] One in May 2025 noticed a batch of “the blue razz tablets were a darker blue than they normally are” and felt a third of the dose.[40] Of Smax, one buyer judged the 60 mg tablets “might feel more like 50 mg”;[26] of the 100 mg tablets another wrote “i agree they definitely aren't anywhere close to 100 mg”.[29] In January 2026: “dosage is soo spotty with those”.[41] The fairest summary in the archive may be the June 2026 buyer for whom Smax were his usual shop tablet: “they're definitely a bit underdosed no suprise but i don't think there's anything fishy in them”.[30] Some buyers liked them best of what their shop had: one gas-station buyer called every other brand on the wall trash “except for the modus 60mgs and 100mg”.[31]

The same thread carries a buyer's memory of the company's position before it sold 7-OH: “one of modus' higher ups said they weren't going to sell 7oh because they were unsure of it”, at a trade show around 2024.[30] We found no recording or report of that.

Modus products are also sold online by kratom web shops. The brand filter of the web shop Kures reads, in part, “mit45 9 modus 4 mojo ohmz 1”: four Modus products.[42] Buyers who knew the brand from its hemp years brought it up. In February 2026 one wrote that “they were big in the smokeshop mushroom game and their shit always sucked”.[43]

Lab results

What the brand publishes. Modus has published certificates of analysis for its hemp products since the Medusa years, and a buyer in 2023 noted that they covered strength only.[1] Some 7-OH cards carry a QR code that leads to a certificate. A buyer in February 2026 said “the labs they have on the qr code are good” and allowed that they could be faked.[43] Another linked a certificate for Smax tablets from a laboratory in San Diego: “they have coas from san diego pharmacy showing 93 mg a tab” against 100 on the box.[44] We could not read that certificate.

An independent test. TestMyKratom, a buyer-funded tester that sends products to Anresco Laboratories, tested the 7-OH capsules from a batch of August 2024. Its post read “modus capsules 7 oh claim 10mg per capsule” and “lab result 6 79mg per capsule”, a grade of C.[45] Its brand page, archived in December 2025, lists that one product, from “batch 2024 08”: “modus capsules contained 6 79mg of 7 hydroxy which was about 32 weaker than its 10mg claim”.[46] It had tested no Modus tablet by that date. TestMyKratom earns money from links to the products it tests.

Regulatory and legal

No warning letter. On 2025-07-15 the FDA announced warning letters to seven sellers of 7-OH: “the fda issued warning letters to shaman botanicals llc my smoke wholesale” and five others. Modus is not one of them.[47] The agency's reasoning applies to the kind of claim Modus Life made. It said some products were adulterated foods or supplements and “others are unapproved new drugs with unproven claims such as relieving pain and managing anxiety”.[47] Modus Life's 7-OH shot was offered as “a simple solution for managing pain and elevating your mood”,[21] and its capsule page said that “7 oh achieves comparable effects with smaller doses minimizing the likelihood of adverse reactions”.[8] None of the archived 7-OH or pseudoindoxyl pages we read carries a warning about addiction or dependence; the Smax Pseudo page described pseudoindoxyl as a compound that “minimizes the likelihood of unwanted side effects” in its body text.[25] An FDA site search for Modus and Medusa on 2026-10-11 found no letter under either name.

The scheduling orders. The DEA's temporary order placed mitragynine pseudoindoxyl and MGM-15 in Schedule I: “this temporary order is effective august 26 2026 until august 26 2028”.[48] From that date the Smax Pseudo tablets were a Schedule I drug wherever they were sold. On 2026-10-09 the DEA filed a second order, for 7-OH and pseudoindoxyl above a threshold, to be published on 2026-10-14.[49] Our deep dives on the bans and on what replaced 7-OH have the history.

The Ole Miss case. Two students at the University of Mississippi were found dead on 2026-09-21. Fox News reported on 2026-10-01, from a sworn affidavit, that “packaging found near both students bears the name modus according to court documents”, and that “the affidavit describes the tablets as smax pseudo dhm and lists pseudoindoxyl and mgm 15 dhm among the ingredients on the pack found near” the first student.[9] DHM is the market's newer name for MGM-15, dihydro-7-hydroxymitragynine; the same three letters are also the usual abbreviation of dihydromyricetin, an unrelated hangover supplement.

The court records Fox published include photographs. The first shows “a package of smax pseudo dhm tablets a synthetic kratom derived product that authorities say was found near” the first student: a Modus Smax Pseudo-DHM card, Mango Breeze flavour, 200 mg tablets, 800 mg a pack. Its back asks the buyer to follow @modus.brand and gives the address buymodus.com.[9] On 2026-10-11 buymodus.com forwarded to a Modus page that links modusbrand.com and moduslife.com. The second photograph shows “packages of synthetic kratom products including smax pseudo dhm and smax pseudo tablets that authorities say were found at the scene” where the second student was found.[9] An Opia card lies beside them.

On 2026-10-03 Gray News reported a federal filing in the case against a shop clerk and his son in Oxford, charged with possession with intent to distribute. It says that a toxicology report on both students “found the substances mitragynine mgm 15 and mgpi in their systems”, MGPI being mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, and “those same substances were found in” Smax Mango Breeze pills found in both rooms. In the shop, “detectives found the same brand of smax mango breeze mgm 15 with identical packaging ingredients”.[50] The owner of the gas station where the second student had reportedly bought a product told Fox that the Smax tablets found at that scene “did not come from his store”.[9]

What the record does not say matters as much. Neither the toxicology finding nor anything else we read establishes a cause of death; the affidavit said that “toxicology results which are still pending could help determine how” the students died, and the later filing reports what was found, not what killed them.[9][50] No document we read says who made the tablets in those packs. Fox found that Modus “doesn't list the smax pseudo tablets on its website”, and that “while it's unclear if the smax pseudo tablets were once on the modus website they're not listed at the moment”.[9] The archive shows Smax Pseudo tablets on Modus Life in July 2025, at 60 mg.[25] We found no Modus listing of a Pseudo-DHM or Mango Breeze product. Buyers had reported counterfeit Smax packs since January 2026 (see Allegations). “multiple calls and emails to modus by fox news digital went unanswered”.[9] A former federal prosecutor told Fox that the company “could face civil and even criminal liability if its product is found to contain a schedule i substance”.[9] No charge against Modus has been reported.

Buyers recognised the pack. When a reader posted a news clipping about the Smax brand on r/7_hydroxymitragynine on 2026-10-04, one reply read “i believe it's modus”.[51]

Allegations: who says what, why, and what we could check

That counterfeit Smax tablets are sold. In January 2026 a buyer who had bought Smax Pseudo online many times wrote that “whenever i bought this brand they are usually round with the modus” M stamped on them, and that the new ones were flat, without the M, “and rock hard”.[52] In February another said of an online order that “the pills are normally rounded with really nice embossed m on them”, and these were flat and a different colour.[44] Both buyers had reason to complain and none posted a test. What we could check: a buyer's photograph of a 100 mg Smax 7-OH card from June 2026 shows round brown tablets stamped with an M and scored with a cross.[30] The court-record photograph shows round tablets with a cross score on the Mango Breeze card; at its size no stamp can be made out.[9] Whether those were genuine Modus products is a question for the case, not one the photographs can answer.

That the tablets contain less than the label says. This is the commonest complaint and the only one with a test behind it: the capsules held 68 per cent of their claim in the one test we found.[46] Nobody has published a test of a Smax tablet that we could read.

The company's own 2022 announcement names California Diamond Distribution as the business behind the name; the domain records withhold the registrant; the footer gives Winter Park, Florida. Florida's and California's business registries are the next searches, under California Diamond Distribution, ModusBrand and Modus Life.

Whether Modus made or sold a Smax Pseudo-DHM or Mango Breeze product. No archived Modus page we read lists one.

What is in a Smax tablet. Nobody has published a test that we could read.
