MGM-15: chemistry
MGM-15 is the working name for dihydro-7-hydroxy mitragynine, a synthetic derivative of 7-hydroxy mitragynine (7-HMG) [1]. MGM-15 is structurally similar to known kratom alkaloids [1]. On GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry), a common method for identifying drugs, MGM-15 converts back into mitragynine during the test itself, so GC-MS can't reliably confirm it's present [1]. In one reported case, LC-QTOF-MS (liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry) was used to confirm the molecule [1]. This matters practically: if you send a sample for testing, a negative or "mitragynine only" GC-MS result doesn't rule out MGM-15.
MGM-15 shows greater binding affinity than 7-HMG at both the mu-opioid receptor (hMOR) and delta-opioid receptor (hDOR) [2]. It also shows higher opioid potency in vitro (in lab, not human, testing) [2]. The greater binding affinities indicate the potential for higher opioid effects and risks [2] — but this is inferred from receptor and lab data, not from human use. MGM-15 has never been studied in people and has no FDA approval [2]. It's currently sold in the US as a research chemical in tablet form, marketed for human consumption despite that gap [2].
