Mitragynines

Indole alkaloids from the kratom leaf and the semi-synthetic compounds made from them. Mitragynine is a partial agonist at the μ receptor with activity at other targets besides; 7-OH is a more potent metabolite now sold in its own right; MGM-15 and MGM-16 are laboratory derivatives. They are filed under Opioids because μ activity is what sets both the effects and the risks, and kept as one family so that a reader of MGM-15 stands beside what it is metabolically related to.

A leaf preparation is a mixture of many alkaloids whose proportions vary with plant, product and processing; an isolated or semi-synthetic derivative is a single compound at a concentration no leaf reaches. Treating the two as interchangeable is the error this family invites. Dependence and a withdrawal syndrome are documented, and reports of deaths involving kratom generally involve other depressants as well.
