Mitragynine: general
Mitragynine is an alkaloid found in the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, the tree known as kratom, primarily sourced from Southeast Asia [1][2]. It's the main psychoactive compound in kratom [2][3][4], acting as a partial agonist at µ-opioid receptors — the same receptor type targeted by drugs like morphine — and, separately, as a competitive antagonist at kappa-opioid receptors [2][4].
The µ-opioid activity is the one thing to hold onto: mitragynine can produce opioid-like effects, including analgesia [2]. Anything with opioid activity deserves opioid-level caution. In Southeast Asia, laborers have reported using whole-leaf kratom for its mild stimulant and pain-relieving effects to get through physical work [2]. More broadly, people report using kratom for pain, anxiety, and depression, and some report using it to replace opiates [3][4]. Whether it's legal to possess or use where you are varies — some countries permit it as a herbal remedy, others have criminalized it over concerns about addiction and dependence [3].
Mitragynine is described as having therapeutic potential for pain with fewer adverse effects than morphine, but this comes from reports, not settled findings [5]. If you're combining kratom with other opioids, sedatives, or alcohol, treat that combination with the same caution you would any opioid stack.
