MGM-15: legal

MGM-15's legal status differs between US federal law and at least some US states. Treat none of what follows as legal advice — check current local rules before you act on it.

As of the November 2025 monograph, MGM-15 was not scheduled under US federal law [1]. That changed: the DEA filed a notice of intent to place MGM-15 into schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act [2], and a temporary scheduling order published in the Federal Register on August 26, 2026 made it a schedule I controlled substance, listed at 21 CFR 1308.11(h)(90) under DEA drug code 9673 [3]. That temporary order runs until August 26, 2028, and can be extended by up to a year if permanent scheduling proceedings are already underway [3].

State law doesn't automatically track federal scheduling, and it hasn't been uniform. Ohio classifies MGM-15 as a schedule I controlled substance [4]. Hawaii, by contrast, does not currently control MGM-15 — or kratom, mitragynine, or 7-OH [5].

Because MGM-15 is also sold labeled as other things — including under other names, inside "proprietary blend" listings, or in products labeled only as mitragynine — someone can end up holding it, or found to possess it, without having sought it out by that name [6].
