Nootropics
A subject defined by intention rather than by mechanism: these are the substances people take to think better, and its four families — racetams, cholinergics, peptides and adaptogens — share no receptor, no scaffold and no legal status with one another. Evidence quality is the axis that actually matters here, and it runs the whole range: a prescription cholinesterase inhibitor with clinical trials behind it sits two clicks from a plant extract whose case for working is traditional use and self-report.
Being sold as a supplement is what makes this subject risky rather than dull. Powders bought by the gram are not assayed, "natural" is not a pharmacological category, and combinations get taken casually here in a way they would not with something that felt like a drug. The stimulant nootropics are not in this subject — caffeine, nicotine and modafinil are filed under Stimulants, by what they do.
