Methylenedioxycathinones

The MDMA-series ring with a ketone added at the β-carbon — the same change that turns amphetamine into a cathinone. Methylone, butylone, ethylone and eutylone are the releasers the family is named for. But it also holds the pyrrolidine compounds, MDPV, MDPHP, MDPBP and N-ethylpentylone, which are potent dopamine reuptake inhibitors rather than serotonin releasers and behave like stimulants, with compulsive redosing, insomnia and paranoia.

That split is the practical warning. These are pressed and sold as MDMA, and eutylone and N-ethylpentylone in particular have reached people expecting MDMA and delivered a long agitated stimulant state instead of the effect they bought. The cathinones without the methylenedioxy ring are filed under Stimulants; these are here because the ring and the market put them in MDMA's place, not because every member acts like MDMA.
