Natural occurrence. Which organisms produce the compound, where they grow, how content varies between species, specimens, seasons and parts of the plant, and what else the organism makes alongside it — the accompanying alkaloids are often the reason a plant behaves differently from the pure molecule. Endogenous chemistry belongs here too: compounds the body makes itself, and the biosynthetic routes plants and fungi use to make theirs. Traditional and ceremonial use is in scope where it is a fact about the organism rather than a recommendation.

Natural is not a safety claim, and this page is not an identification guide. Content varies enough between specimens that an amount worked out on one is not transferable to another, some of the most toxic substances known are made by ordinary-looking organisms, and misidentification kills people who were not taking a risk they knew about.
