Oneirogens

Plants taken for what they are reported to do to dreaming rather than to waking consciousness — vividness, recall, or the sense of having been somewhere. The family is defined by that reported effect and not by a receptor, because no shared receptor has been identified; the plants grouped this way are botanically unrelated, and there is no reason to expect one to behave like another. That is also why they sit in Atypical rather than under Psychedelics or Deliriants: what people describe is neither 5-HT2A psychedelia nor antimuscarinic delirium.

The evidence is almost entirely traditional use and self-report, with very little pharmacology behind it. Nobody knows what most of these plants contain in an active sense, which means potency between preparations of the same plant is unpredictable, and a plant with a benign reputation may still carry alkaloids nobody has looked for.
