DXM: legal

Legal status for DXM within the United States varies by state — this is general information, not legal advice, and it does not tell you what applies where you live.

In the United States, DXM is not controlled under the Controlled Substances Act [1]. It is sold over the counter in cough and cold products [2], and several states have their own laws restricting sale or purchase to people under 18 [1]. That's not covered exhaustively here — check the rules where you actually are.

Legal status is a poor proxy for risk. A substance being unscheduled or sold at a pharmacy doesn't mean the dose or combination you're taking is safe, and a controlled or restricted status elsewhere doesn't mean a small amount is dangerous.

One place this matters directly: DXM powder sold over the internet carries added risk because its composition and dose are uncertain [1]. Combination products carry a related but different problem — other active ingredients in the same pill, like pseudoephedrine or acetaminophen, cause their own harm [1]. Read labels for what else is in the product, every time.
